Teaching English in Guatemala
Volunteers can work with a variety of schools, including elementary,
junior high, or high school levels. There is also the opportunity
to work with adults who are interested in learning conversational
English. Volunteers have the choice of class sizes and the age of
the students. Classes can be taught in the mornings, afternoons,
and evenings. For volunteers with a TESL certificate, there is an
opportunity to get paid a stipend for teaching.
Volunteers can also spend time teaching English at one of the local
community libraries. The library building in San Andres is scheduled
to be completed in the spring of 2007. Volunteers can help run the
library and also work with children who are looking for extra help
with reading, writing, and speaking English. The library will have
a large area for the librarian and books, numerous tables and work
stations, a children's reading area, and an upstairs theater and
classroom.
Volunteers can also work with our local Coordinator to build libraries
in other local communities, with the work including physical labor,
fundraising, and collecting books.
