Monterrico, Guatemala

Our Sea Turtle Conservation Volunteer Program takes place in Monterrico, Guatemala. There are large wildlife reserves and centers in the area for the hatching and release of sea turtles and caimans.

Monterrico is a tropical coastal village that is totally different than the rest of Guatemala. The area has black volcanic sand beaches, thatched-roof architecture, and a sleepy island atmosphere. Monterrico is popular with foreigners and local Guatemalan families as a beach break from Antigua or Guatemala City.

The beach has powerful surf crashing onto land at steep angles. Behind the town is a large network of mangrove swamps and canals, part of the 190 KM Canal de Chiquimulilla.
