We have partnerships with several orphanages where
you can volunteer. The locations are in both rural and urban areas.
The orphanages provide the kids with meals food, shelter, education,
and healthcare.
Volunteers are welcome by the staffs of the homes,
to teach English, play sports, teach arts and crafts or music, take
part in daytrips, and generally show these kids as much love and
caring as they can.
Volunteers have the option of staying with a local host family
or at the orphanage itself. Much of the "formal" work
you'll do with the kids will generally take place from 9-4 each
day, but of course this time-frame greatly expands if you're living
at the orphanage.
In Bangalore, our volunteers work at orphanages located on the outskirts of the city, approximately 30-60 minutes from the city center. The orphanages have 20-30 children. Some of the older children (10+) attend regular schools during the day, while the younger children are at the orphanage all day.
Our volunteers work with the younger children during the day, doing things like teaching basic reading, writing, math, and spoken English, as well as sports, games, songs, and arts & crafts. In the evenings, volunteers also can help the older children with homework, and just spend quality time with all of the children. There are private rooms available at the orphanage where volunteers can live. They can also stay with nearby host families, located within walking distance of the orphanage.
In Delhi,
several of the orphanages are on the outskirts of Delhi, where you
can experience both urban and rural India. One orphanage is a complete
girls orphanage and has more than 40 girls from 7-17 yrs. You would
assist the regular teachers in Delhi with the girls' lessons, or you can
have your own classroom as well. While at the program you would
stay at a residential accommodation within the premises of the orphanage.
Your accommodation would be in a separate room for volunteers and
meals would be provided daily.
In Tuni,
you will be in a much more relaxed and rural setting, especially
compared to Delhi. In Tuni, we send volunteers to
an orphanage that houses 75 children. They have a school onsite
where younger children are taught all disciplines, like English,
Math, History, etc. The older children typically attend regular
local schools. There is ample time for extracurricular activities
such as sports, games, songs, and arts & crafts.
