Volunteer Basketball Coaching in Ghana
Although football (soccer) is the number one sport in Ghana, basketball
has been growing in popularity every year.
Our volunteers work with local basketball organizations and schools in Ghana
that organize leagues, camps, tournaments, and coaching clinics in both
Accra and the Volta Region.
This volunteer position requires a self-starter and good administrator
who has an abiding interest in basketball, either as a current or
former player, coach, official or manager.
The two main aresa of work are seasonal basketball camps as well as ongoing coaching and organizing of teams and leagues throughout the year.
Basketball Camps in Ghana
Two of the highlights of the year are the basketball camps that place in Ghana in July and December in Accra. The camps last 1-3 weeks and bring together the best players in Ghana as well as local and foreign coaches, including Ghana’s senior national team coach Perigrino Lawal Brimah.
You can come as an individual or invite players and coaches from your high school or university team to participate as coaches and counselors to the campers. If you cannot make the camps in July and December, we can arrange special camp sessions during other months so that you and your team/coaches from home can come to Ghana.
Daily activities at the camps include fitness training, fundamental skills training, video sessions, guest speakers, daily trivia session, scrimmages, and skills challenges.
Cosmic Volunteers was proud to co-sponsor the first-ever basketball camp in Ghana that took place in July 2009, and we look forward to sponsoring more camps in the future!
Basketball Coaching and Advocacy in Ghana
Throughout the year, our volunteers assist with coaching players, organizing tournaments,
officiating games, and also helping our local partner basketball organization to plan new
initiatives and programs to promote basketball throughout the country.
The volunteer work typically includes meeting with school administrators
to organize students into teams; establishing practice and training
sessions for the players; recruiting and training local coaches
and game officials; acquiring equipment; designing team logos; arranging
printing of game jerseys; creating competition schedules; maintaining
game statistics; deciding on player awards; and generating publicity
for the leagues.
The Players
The basketball players at the camps and schools include both boys and girls,
and range in age from 8 years to high school age. They are eager
to learn, practice, and play the game, and always welcome foreign
volunteers with Ghanaians' typical friendliness. There are several
players from Ghana who are now playing professionally and at universities
in North America and Europe.
The Volta Region
The basketball program in the Volta Region takes place in the town of Kpando and is a part-time volunteer position. Volunteers typically split time between volunteering with the basketball program and volunteering in another field such as at an orphanage, school, or medical clinic.
