HIV/AIDS Volunteering in Ghana
Our HIV/AIDS volunteer program in Ghana provides volunteers with
the opportunity to help Ghanaians prevent the transmission of HIV
and to provide support and caring to patients and families affected
by HIV/AIDS.
For HIV/AIDS volunteer work in Ghana, the primary location for
our placements is the city of Ho, the regional capital of the Volta
Region located about 2-3 hours from Accra.
Our volunteers work with one of the leading HIV/AIDS advocacy
organization in Ghana. When you arrive, the HIV/AIDS organization
will provide you with training on their work, your specific duties,
and in HIV/AIDS in general.
For 3-4 days a week you will accompany staff on home visits to
patients and families affected by HIV/AIDS. On Fridays at the Regional
Hospital in Ho, you will assist staff with weekly meeting of patients
and families who come to discuss treatment options, get emotional
support, and make friends. Volunteers also make regular visits to
smaller medical clinic for HIV/AIDS patients, as well as participate
in outreach programs in the local community where staff and volunteers
educate people on the disease for prevention purposes and to lessen
the stigma. You can also volunteer part-time at a rural elementary
school where a significant number of children are HIV positive.
For accommodations, in Ho you would live with a host family. Most
volunteers commute by taxi, at about $1 USD per day round-trip from
the host family.
